Right-before-left rules In Germany there is no first come first drive rule on any intersection In Germany, drivers must yield to the right when no signs or traffic lights indicate otherwise. This applies most of the time to residential or industrial areas or 30 kph zones. Right of Way Germany and Europe use a system of "priority roads" (Vorfahrtstraßen) to assign right-of-way. Priority roads are marked with the "priority road" sign. Traffic on a priority road has the right-of-way ("priority") over other traffic at all intersections along the way. Intersecting streets will have a yield or stop sign. Roundabouts Most roundabouts have yield signs, which means cars in the circle have the right of way. However, some do not have signs. In these cases, the right-before-left rule applies and the driver to enter the circle has the right of way. Once in the roundabout, the driver must yield to the right. If you want to exit the roundabout use the turn light indicator. Autobahn On a German Autobahn, it is a law to drive on the right lane whenever possible. For passing a slower car, the driver has to change to the left lane, use the turn light indicator. It is forbidden to pass cars on the right side. If a driver infringes this rule and the German Polizei sees that, a fine up to 450 euros might be imposed. The only exceptions to the rule are getting on the Autobahn, exiting it or being stuck in a traffic jam. Within the city limits, the lanes can be chosen freely. Outside of city limits, passing other cars on the right is forbidden. Emergency lane When a traffic jam comes to a total stop, drivers have to keep an emergency lane for emergency personnel. During an emergency, mere seconds can save lives. “Once traffic slows down, drivers in the left lane should move as far to the left as possible, while drivers in the other lanes should all move as far as possible to the right. Failure to do so, can result in a fine.

Speed limits The normal speed limit within cities is 50kp/h. This limit automatically starts at a sign bearing the city name until a sign appears allowing a higher speed limit or sign indicating the end of city boundary Inside city limits, there can be some inner residential areas where speed limits reduce to 30 kp/h On the Autobahn, the recommended speed is 130 kph, unless a lower speed limit is indicated. Even when it is allowed to drive faster, people might lose their insurance coverage in an accident in bad weather conditions. Immediate Measures after an Accident • Leaving the scene of a road accident without reporting is a severe offence with imprisonment for up to 3 years and a fine. • Immediately switch on the hazard warning lights and drive on the hard shoulder. • Immediately put on your safety vest (all helpers should wear a safety vest). • Put the warning triangle on the right side of the road (at least 150m away). • Provide first aid to the injured, but do not move any seriously injured person. • All persons who do not provide first aid (for example, children) must stay behind the guardrail next to the hard shoulder. • Call the emergency services using your mobile phone or make an emergency call from an orange-colored emergency call box (Notrufsäule). The emergency numbers in Germany are 110 (Police) and 112 (Fire Brigade & Ambulance). They can be dialed free of charge from any public call box. Major Differences compared to the US traffic rules • NO turn on red (except when you see a green arrow next to the red traffic light, most unlikely) • No first come first drive rule on an intersection.
