LGBTQ+ Wedding

As a reminder, you’re attending a queer wedding that less than a decade ago, we could not legally have. Our wedding is only happening thanks to the relentless political activism of generations of our LGBTQ+ family, specifically the activism of our Black Trans family. The LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Movement has a long history, filled with bigotry and violence. Some of you were alive for the Stonewall Uprising in 1969, and most of us were alive for the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998. According to the HRC, so far in 2021, at least 28 Trans people have been murdered, mostly trans women of color. Globally, in 70 countries it is illegal and punishable to be LGBTQ+, and in 12 of those countries, it is punishable by death. And still, the Equality Act is being blocked from passing the Senate, allowing discrimination against queer Americans to continue to be pervasive in our country. We say all this with the hope that you come to New Orleans with respect for all that comes with our queer love and identities, and understand that our celebration will not be rooted in traditions that continue to exclude us. We are so excited to invite you to join us in celebrating our love and we hope that you will come with an open heart, an open mind, and ready to party!
