Update on Amtrak for our San Diego guests...There is a rail closure which will make taking it much more challenging. Those still looking to take the train will be required to take a bus/uber from Oceanside to the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Station

Fly into LAX and catch the Amtrak train straight to Santa Barbara. The train will drop you off a 2-minute walk from Hotel Californian. Beware that Amtrak picks up at Union Station which is 0.5 - 1.5 hours away from LAX depending on the traffic. An alternative station is Van Nuys, which is further but might take less time if you're traveling during rush hour
