We met in college at a fencing club promotional event. Of course, we had both been in the club for a couple years but we weren’t super close as we fenced different blade types. But at the event we got to talk a bit and got to know each other better. We went out for sushi the next day.
We had just spent the last few hours touring the Natural History Museum in New York City. Kayty and Braden’s family, consisting of three mature adults and three senseless buffoons, were getting overwhelmed by the crowds and needed some fresh air. Chris and Braden "casually" suggested a walk in Central Park. Everything was going to plan. They began making their way through the park to the Bridge of Love, a beautiful pedestrian bridge over a stream that leads to a large pond. Upon arriving, Braden had to quickly get people into position. Pulling Kayty over to the railing and getting everyone’s attention, he pulled out the ring box that had been drilling a hole into his leg since that morning. Trying to get out his prepared speech, he felt overcome with anxiety. He knew all eyes were on him. He quickly got down on one knee and, with the ring box open in his hands and the speech forgotten, he said shakily "I love you; will you marry me?" Completely surprised, Kayty said yes.
