It all started with a simple “Hey, how’s it going?” after a swipe. Like many modern love stories, we met online. After a night of chatting about butt-rock and all the usual get-to-know-you questions, Matt asked for her number. From then on, there wasn’t a single morning without a “good morning” text or a night without a “good night.” Our first date was at Vinsetta’s Garage, followed by a walk through Red Oaks Nature Trail where we talked nonstop and laughed while sitting by what turned out to be a very dried-up “pond.” Weekend dates quickly turned into weeknight dinners, and before long we were spending nearly every day together. Eventually, Matt moved in right before our one-year anniversary, and the rest is history.
Matt had a plan. On their four-year anniversary in August 2024, he was going to propose. The only problem? He learned (the hard way) that jewelry stores don’t hand you a custom engagement ring on the spot. Kayte came home from work on their anniversary that year to Matt saying, "So, I messed up". After getting Kayte’s size and designing the perfect ring, all he had to do was wait, while Kayte spent the next few weeks dressing up for every date “just in case.” Finally, on November 1, before heading to a concert in Detroit, Kayte walked out of the bedroom to find Matt standing there with a big red box and his phone propped up to record. Inside were all the little notes, cards, and mementos from their years together. He asked her to marry him, and she said exactly what you’d expect: “It’s about time!” They celebrated that night at a Four Year Strong and Free Throw concert, where Kayte got a signed album that, according to Matt, made her smile even bigger than the ring did.
