In the summer before their senior year of high school in 2013, Blayne messaged Kat on Facebook offering to meet up for sushi. At this point, Kat and Blayne had only met before through mutual friends (back when they used to be cool teenagers who would go to local punk shows). This was the first time they hung out with each other one-on-one. Blayne had never eaten sushi before - he didn't even know how to use chopsticks. So, Kat ordered everything for the two of them, and gave Blayne a few chopsticks pointers along the way too.
After graduating high school in 2014, Blayne was preparing to move to San Luis Obispo to attend Cal Poly State University. Meanwhile, Kat had moved to Pasadena, CA to attend Cal State University Los Angeles. Before Blayne left for Cal Poly, he stopped by Pasadena to visit Kat's new favorite spots around the city. As the two parted ways to begin their new lives as college students, Blayne told Kat that he was "in this for the long haul." They ended up continuing their long-distance relationship through all of college.
After graduating college in 2018, Blayne and Kat both moved to the San Francisco Bay Area for the next chapter in their lives. Here, Blayne began his career as a software engineer, and Kat started her Masters program while working at a nonprofit. For the first time in 4 years, the two were able to meet up multiple times a week to eat pizza and drink beer throughout the city. After a year living apart from each other in the Bay, and taking BART trips across the bridge every weekend, the two ended up moving in together in 2019.
Blayne popped the question on December 28, 2021 at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park. The sun was beginning to set, and Kat was rushing the group to head back to the hotel after a long day exploring. Before they left, Blayne asks Kat's sister if she could take a picture of them. Kat's sister points the camera to Blayne and Kat, Blayne begins telling her how much he loves her. Then, he fumbles around his tote for the ring box, and drops down to one knee. Obviously, she said yes!
