As the title suggests, we met for the first time way back in Sister Barbara's kindergarten class at Aberdeen Roncalli. Kaylyn was a shy 5 year-old who only wore school uniform jumpers, and Joe a cute little guy who was really into Hot Wheels cars and Kaylyn (obviously). Fast forward to September of 2017. We had both recently graduated from college, and Joe reached out to catch up with Kaylyn while he was in Sioux Falls for a bank conference. After almost 20 years of being friends/awkwardly having crushes on each other, we decided to try this dating thing out. After almost a year and half of weekends split between Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, learning how to take care of a fluffy white dog together, pink limos, getting to know each other's friends and family, and marathon Gilmore Girls watching, Joe surprised Kaylyn at her apartment one Friday night ...
After an evening of axe-throwing for a work event, Kaylyn walked into her apartment expecting to have a chill movie night with Joe and some friends. But instead of popcorn and Cats (yep, that's what we were planning on watching!), Kaylyn was greeted by an assortment of candles spread throughout the living room, flowers everywhere, and Joe standing in the middle of it all. After a few minutes of unbelief and exclamations of "is this real life?!" from Kaylyn, Joe got down on one knee and asked Kaylyn to marry him. And she said yes! What followed was a whirlwind weekend of surprise family visits, an engagement party thrown by friends and family, and lots of smiles (and a few happy tears from Kaylyn). It was the best weekend and an amazing start to our engagement.
