For those traveling from outside of Colombia, there are three primary travel options:
(1) Fly to Bogota - Colombia, and then to Santa Marta - Colombia. Flight duration Bogota to Santa Marta is 1.5 hrs with a cost of ~USD$100.
(2) Fly to Cartagena - Colombia and then take transport to Santa Marta by Uber/taxi/car/bus. Cartagena is 135 miles from Santa Marta. An authorized taxi costs ~USD$90, or a Bus taken from the Bus Terminal costs ~USD$20/ticket.
(3) Fly to Barranquilla - Colombia and then take transport to Santa Marta by Uber/Taxi/Car/Bus. Barranquilla is 65 miles from Santa Marta. An authorized taxi costs approximately ~USD$30.
Prior to leaving the airport, we recommend withdrawing some cash in the local currency (COP Colombian Peso) as most taxis will only accept cash. There will be several ATMs available in the airport.
PS: You get better rates withdrawing from ATMs rather than using a Currency Exchange Office
