Long story short: We met in China. The long version: In 2017, Kaylan returned to Kunshan, China for a third year of teaching overseas. One day, early in the semester, another teacher working at the school, Phil Friedman, explained that his son Patrick would be arriving from LA to join our teaching staff. A few days later, Patrick and Kaylan first saw each other when he climbed out of a taxi in front of the school as she was leaving to run errands. He greeted Kaylan with a fantastic smile and a friendly hug, and they went on with their respective days. However, the next morning, Kaylan made a point to meet up with Patrick, and to act as a tiny sherpa, showing Patrick around the city. Over the next few months, Patrick and Kaylan spent more and more time with one another, and went on small adventures together, including electric-dance music concerts, visits to Shanghai Disneyland, and even a jaunt to Hong Kong. After much restraint, (we all know how dating a co-worker can go wrong!) Kaylan and Patrick finally accepted their feelings for one another, and became an item! When the school year was coming to a close in Spring of 2018, Patrick and Kaylan had to make a decision: Do they split and go their separate ways, or do they make something work? Patrick asked Kaylan if she wanted to come with him to Torrance, California, and with his family's blessing, that's exactly what she did! It's a long story, but one that makes us realize that every decision, mistakes and all, we had ever made up to that point led us into each other's arms.
