The Maiyan is an intimate, family-focused event that brings blessings to the marriage. Guests are encouraged to apply a paste made of turmeric onto the bride and groom which symbolizes good luck and prosperity. It also cleanses and prepares the couple for a new stage of life. The Sangeet is a celebration of music, dance, and the coming together of families. The women in the family sing traditional wedding songs that offer advice to the new couple. The Jaggo aka the "wake up" call is a loud, energetic, and bright celebration. Traditionally, relatives would carry lit pots and play the dhol (drum) through the village at night to wake up neighbors and invite them to the upcoming wedding week; the noise also doubled as a deterrent to any individual passing through that might want to burglarize and cause mischief.
