We like to joke that we met at a bar, but we were actually introduced by a mutual friend who happened to invite us out to the same local brewery/bar that night. Matt didn’t talk much to her much at first, but at some point, Kayla asked him if he was hungry and wanted to split a charcuterie board. They spent the evening getting to know each other and bonding over fancy cheese. The night ended with Matt walking Kayla to her car, and the next day, she asked their friend for Matt’s number. They have been talking every day since.
Back in November, Matt asked Kayla to change a flight she had booked to see family. He needed to make sure she was home by 7PM but did not tell her why. When she got off the plane, he told her he had gotten tickets to see The Nutcracker Ballet, one of their first dates four years ago. They stopped and had dinner and a drink at one of their usual spots beforehand, and after dinner, there was about an hour left before the show, so he suggested they go for a walk at the boardwalk in downtown Wilmington. They found a quiet place to stop and started talking about the past years they’d spent together. Both of their hearts were beating hard, and they knew this was about to be a big moment. Kayla was looking out at the water when Matt turned her around and got down on one knee to ask “will you marry me?” He gave her the ring his mother had been given when he was born, a gold band with diamond and garnet, Matt’s birthstone. The night ended with the ballet that started it all. It was perfect.
