The wedding day

Were you surprised by the announcement that we were married? While we wanted to include all of our loved ones, we realized with Julian actively applying for firefighter jobs (and getting LA City!) and Katy starting law school that scheduling a big event with uncertainty around what dates we could even choose wasn’t going to work. We chose to get married at a small park in Glendale that had a picnic area and a gorgeous tree where we said our vows. We had our officiant, Steve Smith and his wife Robin who did our readings. Rene stood in as Julian’s Best Man, and Ben (Katy’s brother) was the Man of Honor. We were lucky to have a friend who took our pictures and made us laugh, resulting in some fantastic photos (see the gallery for some previews!). Because we got married in Glendale, which is where Julian works, we reached out to his crew to see if we could take pictures at the station afterward. Instead, as we were walking up the trail to our location, the fire engine showed up and a crew of firefighters crashed our wedding! That just goes to show how valued Julian is by his crew. While we couldn’t have a wedding at this time with all of you, we look forward to a church ceremony and a party in the future. Until then, we can’t wait to see you and celebrate! Love, Julian & Katy

Love in the Time of Coronavirus

We met in the traditional way - online during the pandemic. As Julian likes to say, “I paid for premium and got premium.” We connected over our love of the outdoors and the musicals that we each listen to. Our first date was a hike (or as Julian likes to call it, a nature walk) where we talked for about 9 miles. We both had different experiences (which ultimately worked out for us!) Katy: We were chatting with another hiker who asked, "so when are you two going to get married?" Julian didn't skip a beat and responded, "well, it's our first date, so we'll have to see how it goes". I knew then and there that I would be going out with him again. Julian: I thought she was kind of weird when she picked up a little bird from the trail and decided to move it to higher ground. No matter what we each thought, we had a good enough time to schedule our second date - the next day...Valentine's Day (risky, we know). We met up at 5:45am, Julian with coffee, Katy with breakfast, and did a little hike to watch the sunrise. We sat up there and talked for 4 hours, and within hours after that had scheduled our next date. From there our dating apps were quickly deleted and we began going on weekend trips, hikes, and spending whatever time we could together in between our weird work schedules. While our initial wedding was tiny, we are planning on future ceremonies and parties, for both west coast and east coast! We can't wait to celebrate down the line and share our love with each of you!
