The Proposal - February 16, 2023

Comedy on One Knee

Proposal from George’s perspective: I brainstormed a lot for a unique and memorable way to propose. Early in our relationship I asked her a lot of questions on how she’d love to be proposed to. Private or lots of people? Family there? Tell people? What kind of ring? I took notes. With that info I brainstormed. Do a magic show? Nah too risky. Try to get her on stage at a music festival? I tried, no one would return my instagram DMs. The one day it hit me. Katy and I watch a lot of stand up comedy. I would always tell her I thought I could do standup, I mean how hard can it be? It’s like doing a work presentation, except this time the laughing would be expected. So I was like that’s it! I will go to an open mic night, do a stand up comedy set, then bring her up on stage and propose at the end of it. I started jotting down inside jokes and funny things about our relationship and soon a loose comedy set was created. It got a little more complicated because I told her and some friends I’d be doing this set in hopes of drawing a crowd. But she couldn’t know the actual set I was going to do, so I had to come up with a whole different set to practice when I was with her. Many comedians choose some R rated jokes to make people laugh, but I had to keep my jokes PG because I knew I’d be showing our kids. I coordinated with the open mic night coordination at the Tampa Improv to make sure my okay would be okay. I practice the set about 100 times. Each time tweaking it just a little bit. On Thursday, February 16 I took the stage and delivered a Katy centered PG set. The jokes were about our relationship and made a perfect segue into me calling her on stage and proposing. The crowd of around 50 people went nuts. It went just about as well as I could have planned it. She was totally surprised but excited at the same time. The comedian after me turned out to be a local stand up comic named John Jacobs. He went on to roast me with a few good jokes, my favorite being “well, I hope the marriage goes better than the jokes.” LOL If you want to watch the proposal you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/702eYVZXms4 John Jacobs posted about his roast of me on his Facebook Reel: https://m.facebook.com/reel/1403420577066375/
