It all started on a quiet night—two people scrolling through their Match profiles, not really expecting much. Then fate stepped in, and Sam and Katya each happened to swipe right on the other. What began with a few light, get-to-know-you messages—questions like “What do you do for work?” and “Where’s your name from?”—quickly turned into long, late-night conversations. A few FaceTime calls later (just to confirm neither was being catfished), it was clear that meeting in person wasn’t just a good idea—it was the next right step. Sam, ever the romantic, had a Hallmark-perfect first date in mind: a walk through a sunflower field followed by lunch. Katya, ever the practical one, had her own plan—lunch first, separate cars… just in case. When she arrived, there was Sam at the entrance, holding a huge bouquet of sunflowers and an even bigger smile. From the moment they sat down, the conversation flowed effortlessly. It’s a good thing they hit it off right away, because Sam’s “sunflower field” turned out to be—wait for it—a cow pasture. (Luckily, that surprise came later.) The day ended instead with laughter, some friendly bowling competition, and the start of something pretty incredible. From that first date on May 22, 2021, every morning began with a “Good morning, beautiful” and an “I hope you have an amazing day.” Evenings were filled with virtual cooking sessions, home-cooked dinners, and friendly competitions over who could pick the next great show, movie, or board game. Nearly three years later—after sharing life’s highs and lows, laughing through countless nights, and growing even closer as best friends—we finally asked, “What are we waiting for?” So, we stopped waiting. We made it official, moved in together, and built a cozy little home—complete with our big, fluffy cat, Zoya, who quickly claimed her throne as queen of the house.
Then came the next big moment—one Sam was determined to get just right. He planned every detail: the ring, the spot, the picnic basket, and even sent a formal “invite” three months in advance. (Because if there’s one thing he’s learned, timing really does matter.) But when the big day arrived… so did the rain. Undeterred, Sam carried the picnic basket through the drizzle to a quiet park behind our family church. We sat down, barely started lunch, and he suddenly asked, “Do you want to get a picture?” Confused but amused, Katya agreed. As a kind stranger snapped a few photos, Sam reached into his pocket and whispered, “Keep them going.” Moments later, he dropped to one knee—voice catching, heart racing—and asked, “Will you marry me?” The answer? A very enthusiastic, bouncing “YES!”
From Kat’s perspective, it was the best surprise of my life. After the initial shock of the proposal, Sam and I went to visit my late mom at Christ Church to share the news in our own special way. On the way back, Sam casually suggested we stop by my dad’s house. As we pulled up, I noticed a small crowd in the driveway. As we drove closer, it hit me—it was our family and friends, all waiting for us. If you were a neighbor, you would of heard me screaming moments before I jumped out of the still-rolling car. In front of me was the most beautiful sight: the people I love most, gathered to celebrate this new chapter. I ran to my dad, hugged my sister, and could barely get the words out: “I can't believe you're all here!” My niece and nephew were holding an adorable homemade sign, our friends had come from near and far. Sam’s parents Patti and Drew - my future in-laws of course were there - I couldn’t believe they’d had the ring for months and more importantly that they had welcomed me into their beautiful family. How on earth was Sam able to keep it a secret?! All of them had come together to pull off the most thoughtful surprise engagement party, down to the tiniest details—including little “Mint to Be” mints. It was pure joy, start to finish, and a day Sam and I will carry in our hearts forever. Now, we can’t wait to celebrate with all of you.
