An Unexpected Union

Steven and Katie had met through mutual friends years before they actually dated. Steven decided to shoot his shot despite the lack of confidence from his friends. They thought that Steven just wouldn’t be Katie’s type (at least, that’s how they said it). After numerous drafts of a message in Facebook messenger were typed and then erased over a week’s time, Steven finally sent Katie a message. Much to his surprise (and his friends), Katie responded. They talked for a few days and he invited her to dinner one night while his son, Tanner, was at basketball practice. Dinner went well and Steven later asked if he could take Katie out again for Valentine’s Day that upcoming weekend. Katie decided that Steven’s persistence was admirable, but given her past, she didn’t feel she had time for games. So she decided on this date she would choose the location and the topics of conversation. Foothills Brewing on Fourth Street in downtown Winston-Salem provided the backdrop for what became quite the interrogation of poor Steven. Clearly, his answers to Katie’s intentionally difficult questions were sufficient because now they’ve planned a wedding. While many people would’ve seen oil and water when they saw Steven and Katie, they actually had quite the opposite effect on each other. They bring out the best in one another and despite all the darkness in their pasts, they have chosen happiness. As Albus Dumbledore said, “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
