Robel and Katie met while they were both students at the University of South Florida. At different times, they both became members of the Epsilon Delta Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity. For a while, they remained simply friendly acquaintances. In fact, it was not until Katie's final semester, just a few weeks prior to her graduation, that they both started to spend more time with a group of mutual friends, and subsequently, each other (their friends may or may not have had something to do with instigating this). Robel eventually asked Katie out on a couple of perfectly planned (her words, not his) dates, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Just a couple of weeks after they started dating, Katie moved to Atlanta for an internship. From there she moved to NYC for graduate school and then to Eastern Europe for a brief time. This meant that for almost the first 2 years of their relationship, Katie and Robel were long distance - in fact, as Robel likes to point out, Katie seemed to get progressively further away from him. Finally, in October 2015, Katie moved to the Washington D.C. area where Robel was already living for graduate school. They enjoyed getting to explore this new area together and on April 1, 2017 Robel took Katie to the Jefferson Memorial, one of their favorite places in the District. There, he and Katie looked out over the Tidal Basin as he began telling her some of his favorite memories from their relationship. He proposed and she of course said yes!
