Question

Will I have problems with the language in Roatan?

Answer

Spanish is the Islands official language, although English was once the common language on Roatan and is still used frequently.

Question

What if I want to rent a car?

Answer

Because of the changing availability of rental cars, we recommend reserving a car before you arrive. You can always rent a scooter as well. A lot of people will take a water taxi or shuttle as well.

Question

What kind of currency can I use on vacation in Roatan?

Answer

US dollars are widely accepted in Roatan. It is recommended that you bring small change as venders cannot always come up with correct change in US dollars. Don't bring bills larger than $20s and $50s as they are hard to change. The local exchange rate is around 25 Lempira to 1 US dollar. Credit cards can be used in most established businesses. Please be aware that if your signature is not an exact match on both lines, we are not able to accept them. If the bills are ripped or badly bent, they will not be accepted.

Question

Are there ATM's available on Roatan?

Answer

There are a few machines on Roatan island though there is never a guarantee that they will be stocked with money. Most charge a credit card fee of 5-8 % to withdraw money. Use American Express Travelers Cheques as they are the most widely accepted.

Question

Are there bugs in Roatan?

Answer

Sand fleas are prevalent in the Bay Islands. Sometimes called no-see-ums, you probably won't even notice these guys are around until you start itching. While some people hardly react to their bites, others may find them to be incredibly annoying. There are natural sprays on the island you can buy or you can bring bug spray/lotion with you.

Question

Do I need a specific sunscreen for the ocean?

Answer

Yes. Using truly reef safe sunscreen is one of the easiest ways to protect the reef in Roatan.
