How We Met

April 1st, 2017

Kyle and Katie matched on Bumble on March 26, 2017. He almost didn't swipe right because she had a weird profile picture (she was photoshopped onto a Top Gun poster) -- but he took a chance. They started messaging, then exchanged phone numbers, and then scheduled a first date. Two days before that first date, Kyle got impatient and asked if he could take her out early. It was April Fools Day 2017. Katie isn't generally very spontaneous -- but she took a chance. That date lasted 8 hours.

The Proposal

June 12th, 2019

Katie knew that Kyle had bought a ring, but had no idea when or how he was going to propose. Finally, he started to slip her some details. He told her that they would be going on a date every night for a week, and on one of those dates he would propose. (A great way to surprise someone who hates surprises.) The first date night was a walk down memory lane. They went to some of the many places they had been to on their first date, and talked about all their favorite memories together. It was a wonderful night, but he didn't propose. The next date night they went to the restaurant where they had dinner on their first date -- Saigon Beach. She was pretty sure the proposal wasn't coming that night, so they just ate and laughed and talked about what they were looking forward to in their future together. Then they went for a walk on the Newport Pier, to the bench where they watched the sunset on their first date. As they walked, she asked him if he thought their bench would be available. He answered that he was sure of it. Suddenly she saw that their bench was surrounded by candles, and there was even an accordion player! Kyle pulled a speech out of his pocket, got down on one knee, and proposed. After what seemed like an eternity to Kyle, she said yes! They went home and finally opened the bottle of wine they had bought on their one year anniversary -- the one they had been saving for the night they got engaged.
