Katie was the sneaky wave that swept me off my feet and has become the best wave of my life. I must admit, I didn’t see her coming. She secretly asked for my number “just” to get some volleyball games going. I thought she was cute, fun, charismatic and spontaneous. We met up several weeks later in the backyard of a house party - I was sitting on a blue trash bin and Katie leaned her back against my knees. I gave her a shoulder massage right then and there, it just made sense at the time! I remember laughing the night away as we walked back to campus. Soon after that, I asked her out to pick flowers for our school’s Rose Float parade at the flower fields. That afternoon was pure magic. Katie, a dedicated and hard-working student, even skipped a class to extend this afternoon with me. We found ourselves exploring orchards and cornfields, laughing and darting between the rows. We laid on the grass under a tall bean pod tree and she asked me questions about where I grew up. We talked for a long time. That was the moment, though I had no idea at the time, that I began falling for her. I stole a kiss from her, our first kiss, in those cornfields a few weeks after that. We quickly learned how much fun we could have together. Her adventurous spirit inspired me and she makes me laugh every day. How lucky am I!? I think I am just on the bottom turn of this Katie wave, and man, it has been a blast so far!
Kai landed on my list of “Top 3 Cutest Guys in the Dorms” my first night of college. I remember chatting with my roommate after orientation and saying I saw a blonde from across the room named Kai who seemed cool. He was apparently from some place named Saipan, wherever that was! A few weeks later I couldn’t pass up the chance to get Kai's number for a little texting banter (all on my old slide phone!). Under the guise of wanting to meet up for some beach volleyball I very intentionally asked for Kai’s number (and his roommate’s, who was actually good at volleyball). Later we proceeded to play the worst beach volleyball match of our lives. Even so, Kai was so friendly and sweet, we were smiling and laughing the whole time. I remember looking Kai up on Facebook and seeing videos and photos of his life in Saipan. I kept laughing at how this guy somehow seemed interested in me. His photos looked like some Nat Geo catalogue and I had never even been snorkeling! To my surprise, on Halloween night, at a college party, the stars aligned. I was with friends in the backyard of a house party and Kai had come outside to pee. So romantic. Some chatting ensued and soon enough Kai was giving me a shoulder massage. Needless to say I was stoked! After Halloween Kai asked me on our first date. We had such a fun time laughing and getting to know each other that I even skipped class! Kai was so calming and kind, he had exciting stories of the ocean he loved, and an enthusiasm to share his adventures with me. Soon enough we had our first kiss, under the stars and in the cornfields. Kai would pick little jasmine flowers for me and his laugh made my heart feel like it was going to burst. By the end of first year I remember laughing and thinking “I wasn’t expecting to meet 'the one' at 18!”. Now, looking back, I feel so lucky that we met when we did. And even luckier we get to spend the rest of our lives together!
