Darren and Katie first met at the Dayton Greek Festival. Both were volunteering at booths right next to each other, him the gyro booth and her the loukoumades booth. Katie was standing there disassociating after her third 12 hour day scooping fried dough, covered in sticky honey, with bees swarming her. Darren was grilling gyro meat when he inquired to his fellow worker, "Who's that pretty girl over there?" To Darren's shock and horror, every thea (auntie) within earshot initiated their matchmaking duties. Katie looked up to see a group of women dragging a boy behind them (Darren), where they briefly gave the two an introduction to each other, and pushed them into the aisle to chat (with everyone watching and videoing the encounter). While awkward and embarrassing at the time, the matchmaking efforts paid off in the end and is now a funny story to tell! Darren would like to also give a special thanks to Rick Riordan, the author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Without which, a young boy from Puerto Rico would've never gotten interested in learning about Greek myths, then Greek history and culture, then learning about Orthodoxy, then converting to Orthodoxy, then volunteering at Greek festivals, then serendipitously ending up in Dayton, Ohio meeting his future wife.

Darren y Katie se conocieron en el Festival Griego de Dayton. Ambos trabajaban como voluntarios en puestos contiguos: él en el de gyros y ella en el de loukoumades. Katie estaba allí, desvinculándose tras su tercer día de 12 horas sirviendo masa frita, cubierta de miel pegajosa, rodeada de abejas. Darren estaba asando carne de gyro cuando le preguntó a su compañero: "¿Quién es esa chica guapa de ahí?". Para sorpresa y horror de Darren, todas las thea (tías) que estaban al alcance del oído comenzaron a buscar pareja. Katie levantó la vista y vio a un grupo de mujeres que arrastraban a un chico detrás de ellas (Darren), donde se presentaron brevemente y los empujaron juntos para charlar (mientras todos observaban y grababan el encuentro). ¡Aunque incómodo y vergonzoso en aquel momento, el esfuerzo de buscar pareja dio sus frutos al final y ahora es una anécdota divertida! Darren también quiere agradecer especialmente a Rick Riordan, autor de la serie Percy Jackson y los Dioses del Olimpo. Sin él, un joven puertorriqueño jamás se habría interesado en aprender sobre los mitos griegos, la historia y la cultura griegas, a ortodoxia griega, la conversión a la ortodoxia, el voluntariado en festivales griegos y, por casualidad, haber llegado a Dayton, Ohio, donde conoció a su futura esposa.
