In 1996, Cody and his Mom, Piper, decided to change up their lives for the better. Little did they know, one of these life changes would lead him to the love of his life, Katie Critchfield. That year, Cody asked his Mom if he could switch elementary schools from Barranca Elementary to Sonrise Christian School, so he could attend school with his best friend from the neighborhood, Scott Sladick. Piper thought that this would be a good life change. Cody was going into 4th grade that year. When Cody got accepted into Sonrise, he switched Boy Scout troops, started playing year around sports with KARE Youth League, and his Mom and him adopted a big white boxer named Petey. Cody met many new friends at his new school and one of those friends was named Spencer Critchfield. Spencer was also in Boy Scouts and played sports at KARE Youth league so they quickly became friends and spent a lot of time together in and outside of school. Spencer had a twin sister named Katie who always wanted to be with her brother and tag along to do whatever he was doing. Cody would often spend the night over at the Critchfield residence, swimming and playing all the games young boys do, like role playing army men, playing basketball and hacky-sac. yes, Katie paticipated in the the army too. The families became quick friends and did most things together for Scouts, School and Sports. In 5th grade, Katie and Cody had the same class together and also became great friends. After 8th grade Cody would go to South Hills High School and Katie and Spencer would go to San Dimas High. During those years, they didn’t get to spend as much time together as they used to, but still remained good friends and kept in touch. Katie was also close with Cody’s Mom and they would scrapbook together and do artsy stuff even when Cody wasn’t home. Cody and Katie continued their friendship and would occasionally hang out. In 2006, after high school, Cody moved to Northern California to attend Humboldt State University for a couple years. Cody and Katie would talk on the phone and keep in touch while Katie enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Downtown Los Angeles. When Cody decided to move back home to Covina and enroll at Mt. San Antonio College to study Restaurant and Hospitality Management, Katie and Cody reconnected and would spend time together, going out to try restaurants in Pasadena and go to the movies together. In June of 2015, Piper passed away and Cody was having a tough time. He would often call Katie to talk and she was always there for Cody to listen and be a source of loving support. Katie adored Piper and finds herself to be creative with her help as she was young. Katie was a great organizer and when Cody was overwhelmed with the task of organizing his childhood home, he called Katie and asked if she would help him take on the huge task. She was there right away and they started spending weekends together. Eventually, they decided to go on a real date. At the end of the night, they sealed it with a kiss and began a loving relationship full of travels. After a year of working on the house, Katie moved in! For the next couple years, we continued to work on the house, and take many trips to San Diego, Vegas and Northern California. In 2020, We sold Cody's childhood home after 5 years of perfecting it and making it a beautiful home including Katie's ultimate makeup room. We loved hosting friends and family. There are so many cousin's wine nights, family swim parties, friends domino nights, and at home date nights. Out first home together holds such amazing memories of our first years together full of love, laughter til we cried and our stomachs hurt, full of lots of cooking and experiments like cooking fish in the fireplace when the power went out and finding out our love of making pasta from scratch and cooking together in the kitchen with music, singing and dancing.
