In the fall of 2023 we kicked off our wedding celebrations with two events, a Nikah and Valima. According to Islamic tradition, the Nikah ceremony legitimizes the relationship in front of God. In this intimate ceremony, we vocalized our "acceptance" of one another in marriage. Along with this, we signed our marriage contract-- something that has historically existed to protect a woman's rights in marriage. Our ceremony was short and sweet, including a brief sermon about love, grace, and commitment by our appointed officiant. We were accompanied by some of our closest friends and family. Next, we had our Valima which is the reception that celebrates the marriage! In the Islamic faith, marriage is considered to be one of the greatest blessings, and it is especially important to bring loved ones together to celebrate the union. In thinking about how we wanted to honor all traditions, religions, and cultures for our wedding, we decided it would be best to host several wedding events. This allows for us to fully embrace each event without minimizing the traditions, while allowing ourselves the opportunity to spend quality time with our family and friends from both sides. In June of 2023, we continued the celebration abroad in the most picturesque place ever-- Lake Como, Italy! It was there that we exchanged our vows and wedding bands in a private ceremony. To close out all of our wedding celebrations, we've put a lot of thought into our "Happily Ever After Party" as a way to honor some of the wedding traditions that Katie has envisioned with her extended family and friends. We sincerely appreciate our guests' willingness to participate in these events. With grateful hearts we thank you for your support as we work to blend our families, and celebrate this milestone in our lives.
