FAQs

Question

How do I get to Cuenca?

Answer

You will have to get a flight to Quito or Guayaquil. From there you take a short flight to Cuenca. When booking, check the flights separately (not round trip) because sometimes there are more options to Cuenca. From the CUENCA AIRPORT to your hotel, either call the hotel and ask if they have a shuttle service or take a cab right outside the airport. Ask an airport employee if you don’t see any.

Question

What is the currency in Ecuador?

Answer

Since the 2000’s Ecuador currency is US Dollar. I know … no math needed ;) A lot of places and taxis will only accept cash, so have some on you, but in small denominations.

Question

Is Ecuador safe?

Answer

As travelers ourselves, we go back to Ecuador every year to visit my family. The most accurate response it is that going to Ecuador is the same as going to Mexico City, other countries in South America, and a lot of countries with heavy tourism in Europe. Keep your belongings with you, don’t show off your iPhone or expensive items, and just be street smart. Cuenca itself is very safe to walk around. If you flight to Guayaquil, I don’t recommend you drive to Cuenca even if it is a few hours away. Guayaquil its not as safe and you need to know your way around. If you fly to Quito and might have to spend some time, I recommend you stay in airport or take a room at the Wyndham airport hotel to rest a little. The Airport also has a lounge in the building across the street, if you prefer to take a nap there. Quito is known for heavy traffic, so if you leave the airport for a few hours you might get stuck in traffic on your way back, plan accordingly.

Question

How do I get around in Ecuador?

Answer

Even tho Quito already has Uber, in Cuenca you still get around by yellow taxis. Please make sure to ask the front desk of your hotel to call a taxi for you, that is the safest way to make sure you get a licensed taxi. Taxis are very cheap, but they only accept cash so you should have a few cash in your wallet.
