Our Story

January 2020

The story starts back in early January 2020, when Jon and Kathryn were starting their final semester of grad school at UNC Charlotte. On the first day of classes, Jon and Kathryn found themselves in the same studio class. By this point, in her final semester, Kathryn assumed she had seen and met almost everyone in the School of Architecture at UNCC since she had also done her undergraduate degree there. But on this first day of classes, she spotted someone in studio she hadn’t yet met: Jon of course! Their last semester is up and running and a class trip is announced for the first week of February. The studio would be traveling to New York City for 4 days of architecture, walking around the city, site research, and more. It was on this trip that Kathryn & Jon found themselves walking through NYC with their class, but often times realizing they were blocks ahead of everyone else. They were too busy talking and walking fast to realize they had left the rest of the group behind. It was on the last night of this school trip, after several days of walking and talking their way through NYC, Jon asked Kathryn if she’d like to leave the rest of the class that evening and go for a drink just the 2 of them. And after a fun filled long weekend in NYC, Jon asked Kathryn if she wanted to go on a real date the following week, back in Charlotte. Their first date was the day after Valentine’s Day, dinner at Superica followed by drinks at roof top bar Merchant and Trade. One month into dating, in March 2020, COVID shut the world down. And from this moment on, Jon and Kathryn were each others bubble. They spent every weekend together, cooking fun meals in Jon’s apartment in uptown, watching movies, hiking in the mountains, etc. They finished their Masters of Architecture, and began their careers at different architecture firms. Over the last 4 ½ years, they moved in together to an apartment in Plaza Midwood that they loved for almost 3 years, became licensed architects together, travelled, got engaged in NYC as an ode to the city they hit it off in, and also bought a house in the Elizabeth neighborhood of Charlotte. We could not be more excited to celebrate our love story with our favorite people at the Mint Museum Randolph, just minutes away from our new home, in the city we love and have made so many memories in. We look forward to seeing you there!
