In 2016 Kate was meeting some friends at a Starbucks in Tampa, FL on a Saturday morning. Chudi was there as well, enjoying a morning alone and getting some work done on his laptop. Floridians are very generous with their air conditioning, so even though it was about 93 outside, the cafe they were sitting in was a balmy 62 degrees. And so Chudi brought along a sweatshirt. A sweatshirt from his semester abroad at the University of Seville. Kate spotted it immediately and (to her friend’s horror) frantically gestured for him to take off his headphones. Kate had studied abroad there too, and so she obviously wanted to talk about it. It didn’t take them long to realize that Chudi had been in Seville the semester before Kate was. They had only missed each other by about 45 days. Back in Tampa, they exchanged information and connected on Facebook, but never bothered to actually hang out again. A few months later, Kate was swiping through Bumble when she saw someone she thought she recognized. She wasn’t sure though, so she opened with a generic “hey, how are you?” Chudi immediately responded with “don’t I know you? I think we met already.” And the rest is history. Six years later, after surviving long distance, a quarantine, a move to NY, and many of the highs and lows life throws your way, Chudi brought Kate to her favorite spot in Ithaca, NY. He put on that same beat up sweatshirt he was wearing the day they met, dropped to one knee and asked her if she wanted to “keep this thing going” (he was nervous.) As you may have guessed, she said yes.
