This is Andrew’s favorite Finger Lakes winery. Riesling is the region’s most recognizable grape, and Boundary Breaks makes a few delicious styles. Plus this winery is dog-friendly and has a dog park!
As Kate’s mom says, if you’re in Watkins Glen, you must walk the gorge in Watkins Glen State Park. You’ll see 19 natural waterfalls and get some exercise. We even got Sam and Owen to do it and maybe kind of enjoy it! It is an out-and-back trail that is about a mile and a half with a lot of steps. There is a shuttle available so you can park at the top and enjoy a leisurely stroll down, and then get a ride back to your car. It is best to go early to avoid the crowds. You can avoid the parking fee by finding a free spot on the street on one of the side streets across from the park.
Want to take a swim or sun yourself near the water? Smith Park used to be Kate’s go-to spot (before her brother bought a cottage on the lake). It’s a free public beach.
if you need a spot for lunch, Glen Mountain Market Bakery is a solid option. Kate and Andrew are spoiled by Anne Myers’ cooking, so they don’t eat out in the Finger Lakes too often. But this bakery makes breads and pastries from scratch and has something for everyone. They also have coffee!
Taughannock Falls is the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi! You can stop by the park and marvel at this natural wonder from the scenic overlook with no sweat. If you want an easy hike, this is highly recommended by the couple’s dog Dodger. You can walk an easy, flat half mile on a wide gravel path to see the falls up close. If you are feeling a little more adventurous or want to stay cool, which Dodger enjoys, you can walk in the shallow creek to see the falls.
