San Diego to MX after 3 pm on a Friday

The traffic to leave San Diego in to Mexico becomes more of a hassle on Fridays after 3 pm. It might take up to 2 hrs just to enter Mexico. The earlier you plan to drive from San Diego to Ensenada the better.

The best and safest option is to take the toll road to Ensenada labeled as “Carretera Escénica Ensenada QUOTA” do not take the “Libre”. This is a beautiful road along the coast with a total cost of ~$6dlls. NOTE: Take cash they do not accept credit cards.

Do I need to buy pesos?

Not necessarily, every place you go to in Ensenada will accept cash in dollars. From the toll roads to any taco stand will take US dollars.

Ensenada is a very touristy location in Mexico which comes with its benefits of having a lot of security. On a weekly basis cruise ships from San Francisco, Disney and San Diego dock at the pier. Ensenada is also popular for destination’s weddings for the US and all parts of Mexico.
