The closest major airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA) which is a 20 minute drive to Newport Beach proper, although flights into Long Beach Airport (45 minutes) and Los Angeles International - LAX (1 hr) usually have the best deals on flights. For those flying in renting a car is an easy way to get around the Souther California area, but if you plan to stay in Newport renting a car is not necessary as uber and hotel shuttles make most sights easy to access.
