Our Love Story

Her story : After moving to Chico, I was in search of a church I could call home. My friends from ywam, the Liu’s, had invited me to Promise Church. And that’s when I saw Jahai. He was preaching that Sunday. I definitely can’t remember what he was preaching about. But I can tell you what I was thinking- dang this guy is cute! There’s no way he could be single…or could he??? I remember listening intently, trying to pick up cues. He talked about his home and his grapevine. About cooking for himself. I was pretty sure he was single. As interested as I was right from the start, I didn’t get my hopes up. I just started praying. God did lead me to continue at Promise Church- and I can PROMISE you it wasn’t because there was a really cute guy there who filled in on Sundays. I promise! After a month or so of small interactions with Jahai, one Sunday I had finally talked myself into striking up conversation with him. If you know me, that is not my personality at all. But I knew I wanted to get to know this guy- I had discovered that not only was he good looking, but he loved the Lord with all of his heart, he was fun-loving and very involved with our church. In my eyes, he was the full package. So, after church that Sunday I came up with my game plan. After the service, I walked out the door to go say hi. Sadly, when I spotted him, he was deep in conversation with a church member. That was enough for me to give up on my plan. I got in my car and drove home. Disappointed and feeling down on my luck. Thankfully, God had other plans. Plans that would show me it was Jahai pursuing me. And not the other way around. That following Friday, he texted me. I swear to you, I felt my stomach drop immediately. A good friend of mine had been praying with me during this time. It had just been the day before that we prayed together, asking God that if this was His plan, that He would bring it together. God is good. And sometimes He is quick to answer. I am thankful when He is. Jahai asked me to coffee, where we spent a few hours talking and getting to know one another. Just a few days later, we met up for dinner. And once again, got lost in conversation. It has been that way ever since. Thank you, Lord, for writing our love story. His story : After waiting 7 long dreary years in the wasteland of singleness (jk, singleness is a blessing!) it happened! A beautiful woman caught my eye as she was worshiping the Lord with her hands raised high and her lips mouthing the words to my favorite worship song! Do I spring into action? Do I play it safe and ask around before making my move ? Did she notice me ? Is she looking at me right now looking at her asking myself these questions? I know!! I’ll get her connected into a small group , it is small group season. I slowly make my approach and ask “hey how long have you been coming to Promise?” She responds “only a few weeks” I respond “well have you checked out our small group table?” I proceed to walk her to the small group table with my hands sweating profusely and my voice beginning to flutter. We peruse a few small groups and the one that catches her attention the most is “Young Adults” “Oh no” I say in my mind! “Is she a young adult?” I also say in my mind. Just then Pastor Vivian steps in and asks her age. “34” she says! I sigh in relief! First crisis in our love story averted! Turns out she wanted to attend young adults because she had some young women at the missionary base that she wanted to get connected to the church. “mission minded, me likey” I think to myself. On young adults night I again show up with nerves because there she is beautiful as ever. We play games, worship and watch a video. Once we break up into groups is when my life changed! Once I heard her take lead of her group and encourage these young women in the Lord I knew I needed to make my move! I proceeded to ask her out to coffee on November 4th, 2023 and now here we are! Must have been a great cup of coffee!

For all the days along the way
