How We Met

First comes school, then comes marriage

Jonathan: Karissa and I briefly met at an intramural softball game Freshman year. However, it wasn't until Junior year when I walked into Thermodynamics class that I saw Karissa again. We had another class together and Monday's and Wednesday's soon became my favorite days of the week. Karissa: When I walked into Thermodynamics class, Spring of junior year, and I couldn't help but sit next to him. We soon became study buddies, where I studied and Jonathan pretended to while actually watching football. We filled our breaks by walking to Jamba Juice, when I wondered if we could ever be more than friends. That summer Jonathan and I continued our late night conversations while I was studying abroad in Spain, solidifying that there was a spark we both felt. Once back at Cal Poly, we watched the sunset over dinner at Ventana Grill in Pismo Beach for our first date.

The Proposal

Inca Trail, Peru - 11/28/19

Karissa: In November 2019, we traveled to Peru to embark on the 4 day Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu with my family, trekking more than 26 miles and surviving a handful of epic rain storms. The last day of the trek, Jonathan was walking so far ahead of me. I just figured he was tired and wanting to get to Machu Picchu. Just as we arrived to the sacred Inca spiritual site called "Sun Gate”, Jonathan suggested we take a picture, but the fog rolled in completely blocking the view of Machu Picchu. My family insisted we wait a couple minutes but I was getting anxious and suggested we skip the picture and continue on. Jonathan: I was practicing my proposal speech all morning while walking to Machu Picchu, staying ahead of Karissa so she wouldn't see my emotions. Once we got to the proposal spot, the guide gave me the signal and I suggested we take a picture. We started asking all types of questions to stall, waiting for the fog to lift. Once the fog lifted, we took one picture, and I grabbed her hands and managed to squeak out "Best Friend, I Love You, Marry Me?" before all of his happy tears started flowing. The moment was perfect!
