Nicos and Karina’s story began in a way neither of them expected. Both were teachers at the same high school—Nicos, a Special Education teacher, and Karina, a Biology teacher. The year was just starting, and as fate would have it, Karina sat next to Nicos at the first professional development meeting of the school year. That was the moment, he says, when he fell in love with her. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something special was in the works. For Karina, love came a little later. At first, she admired Nicos’ dedication to his students—his deep care and compassion. She witnessed firsthand how he connected with them which drew her in. Karina began to realize there was so much more to Nicos, he had a heart as big as his kindness. As the year progressed, their friendship blossomed. Nicos, having to give up his classroom to a floating teacher, found himself without a dedicated space during his conference period. He asked Karina if he could join her in her classroom since they had the same conference time. It was in those quiet moments between classes, sharing a space and chatting about everything from their pets to their families to their favorite hobbies, that they grew closer. They quickly became each other’s confidants, talking about their days and the ups and downs of teaching. Later in the school year, on Nicos’ birthday, he made it official and asked Karina to be more than just a friend. The bond between them had already been growing, and now it was clear that it was something much deeper. Over the next two years, Nicos and Karina continued teaching at that same high school. Their relationship grew stronger, and they finally decided to make the leap and move in together. They transferred to local high schools near their new neighborhood, a new chapter in both their professional and personal lives. Today, they share their home with their beloved pets—Chanwee, Theodore, Boogie, and Jroc—and enjoy the simple pleasures of life: spending time at home, hanging out with family, enjoying the outdoors, and, of course, frequenting their local taqueria for some of the best food (cheese enchiladas for Karina and a Mexican burger for Nicos) and margaritas in town. Their love story, built on a foundation of caring, kindness, silliness, laughs and shared experiences, continues to grow each day. It’s clear that sometimes, love shows up when you least expect it.
