Summer of 2019, Kari Kraakevik, owner of Boulder Music, received a very interesting email, entitled "Hiring?" from a certain egotistical piano player, Joshua Rich. Joshua had just moved from NYC and wanted to teach/play everywhere he could! Used to the NYC timeline, he very quickly realized that Boulder's "scene" was a bit different. Kari received his email, in which he exclaimed, " I am a self-proclaimed prodigy with over 30 years teaching experience.." and was amused by the apparent egotism, and decided to interview him, with FULL intention of "putting him in his place" as any young brash, lesbian would do. Needless to say, this handsome, understated man walked it, very unlike his verbose emails, and nailed the interview. Joshua was then asked to return for an audition and trial lesson with Student Payton Keeler. He came in, sweated over the classical pieces that Kari menanicigly picked for that very reason.. and sight read four different, very difficult musical theater pieces. Finally, Kari picked something from Payton's music binder haphazardly "Black Velvet," Joshua closed the binder, and looked at Payton--they performed without rehearsal, one of the most chilling versions of Black Velvet ever heard. He was hired. From there, Joshua took on more and more responsibilities in Kari's companies, practically running the music school side of things and interfacing with clients and press.. and then.. there was the duo! After many student concerts, Joshua and Kari were asked to perform themselves! Some of the "classics" at a film festival in Boulder... thus birthed Take Two, a jazz duo! Since then Take Two has recorded three albums performed in seven countries and has taken a life of its own! Working together, Creating together, performing together... it was only natural to just be.. well, together. Despite the many obstacles faced, Kari and Joshua have entered the new year with a new perspective on Love--a love that is truly undesirable by words or even music!
