J.D. messaged me on an online dating website and expressed interest in taking me out. In true Kari fashion, I got impatient and told him I wasn't going to go on a date with myself, so he should let me know when he was serious. To my credit, a couple of months passed in between messages. He messaged again a couple of months later and we made plans to meet up for dinner at Cafe Trio in Cottonwood Heights. While I was waiting in the parking lot for him to arrive, I saw a fancy pants 7 series BMW pull in and was about to leave because I grew up much more modestly and was expecting him to be the stereotypical arrogant attorney. Thank goodness I put my judgment aside and decided to go through with it anyway because he is the absolute best thing that has ever happened to me and he's more down to earth than anyone I know.
We went to Colorado to attend one of J.D.'s best friends' weddings. J.D. took me for a walk around the Tenth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in downtown Denver and talked about how this courthouse has been a symbol of achievement, growth, and letting go of things and people that were holding him back. He showed me pictures and reminisced on his experiences there. Once we had circled all the way around, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, saying that marrying me would be his greatest milestone and achievement. I am so very lucky.
