A new travel requirement called ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) will be introduced for many visitors to Europe, including Italy, later in 2025. This means you'll need to complete a quick online application before your trip. Update: Good news! ETIAS is not yet in effect, so your May 2025 travel plans to Italy are not impacted. You can learn more at the official ETIAS website: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/etias_en.
Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your departure from Italy. For example, if your planned departure date is July 30, your passport must be valid until at least October 30.
The average temperature in Lucca during the month of May averages around 70 degrees with highs in the 80s and the lows in the 50s. We recommend bringing layers!
Euro is the local currency in Lucca. Tips are accepted in restaurants and cafés. 10% tip will be quite enough. For a taxi driver, hotel maid, etc. 1-1.5 Euro is appropriate. Of course, it is really whatever you are comfortable with.
WhatsApp is a great and easy-to-use app available to download for free or iMessage if you have an iPhone! Facebook Messenger is also a simple and convenient way to communicate while abroad.
Ubers and Lyfts are not available in Lucca. We highly recommend downloading the app, "apptaxi" BEFORE traveling as the app may not function properly with a US number while in Italy. See https://www.apptaxi.it for more info.
