Karen and Nestor met in the beautiful island of St. Kitts while in veterinary school. They had their first kiss at a party held every beginning of the semester (Mr. Ross) and started hitting it off shortly after. Nestor would invite Karen on hiking trips not knowing this was completely out of her comfort zone. They would study together and go to the beach on their days off. Karens time on the island came to an end when she had to move to Auburn, Alabama for her clinical year and they both decided it was better for them to remain as friends. During Karens first semester at Auburn, Nestor surprised her during his mid-semester break by visiting her and asking her to be his girlfriend. Two semesters later, he joined Karen at Auburn University with her fur baby Luna. A year later, Karen adopted another dog, Nala, to keep Nestor company when her clinical year was over and was moving to Miami to work. The four of them have been inseparable ever since. Nestor decided to move from Puerto Rico to Miami to be with Karen and continue his career. Everything was meant for them to be together.
A lot of songs were played and (badly) sung a year before the actual engagement. Karen sang "Casate conmigo" and "El anillo pa cuando" numerous times. Karen always pictured her fairy tale engagement where her dogs would be present, her nails would be done, and a secret photographer would be hiding in the bushes to capture the big day. Nestor, however, knew her very well and told Karens mom he wanted it to be when she least expected it. One random day that they both had off, Nestor told Karen they needed to start saving more money and needed to stop eating out so many times a week. He gave her the option to choose any one restaurant that she has been wanting to try as a last splurge. She chose La Mar by Gaston Acurio and they went there that night. Nails were NOT done, but this was all part of his plan. They had a wonderful dinner and talked a lot about their relationship and how happy they were. When dinner was over, Karen was ready to go home as she had surgery at work the next day. Nestor wanted to walk along the boardwalk and insisted they do. Karen didn't think anything of it except that he was just being Nestor and wanted to be outdoors because she had looked at his pants in the car and saw no sign of a box in his pockets; something she did on the regular. They walked along the boardwalk as she complained about how her feet hurt and had to work the next day. At that moment Nestor grabbed Karen, told her he loved her and asked her for a kiss. She told him she loved him too and then he said "and your mom knows how much I love you too". He then took out his wallet (which confused Karen), got down on one knee and pulled a ring out and asked her to marry him. Out of panic Karen walked away as she started crying. Don't worry, she came back quickly after and said yes! A more perfect and romantic engagement? Impossible.
