Three Sisters Falls Trail

Three Sisters Falls Trail

Cleveland National Forest, CA

Fun Mushy Fact! Camping up on this ridge after having spent the day exploring Three Sisters Falls was the first time we said "I love you" to each other (insert "awwwww" sounds here). The hike is about 30 minutes from Julian, but well worth the effort and somewhat strenuous hike down (and, more importantly back up from the falls). Make sure to bring lots of water!

Lake Cuyamaca Recreation & Park

Lake Cuyamaca Recreation & Park

15027 California 79, Julian, CA 92036

Lake Cuyamaca is a beautiful 110 acres reservoir and recreation area just 15 minutes from Julian's historic town. It is situated at an elevation of 4600 feet in an Oak and Pine forest, and is surrounded on three sides by the 26,000 acre Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, which is 52% wilderness. Enjoy hiking, birdwatching, fishing, boating, camping, or just sit back and relax along the lake's edge.

William Heise County Park

William Heise County Park

4945 Heise Park Road, Julian, CA 92036

Forests of oak, pine, and cedar surround peaceful mountain meadows and provide an undisturbed setting for nearly 11 miles of scenic trails. Mule deer and wild turkey are frequently seen throughout the park, and rare residents include bobcats and mountain lions. In addition to trails, you can take advantage of cabins, trailer sites, individual tent sites, and a group-tent camping area, along with several playgrounds, restrooms with coin-operated showers and ample picnic spaces. Rangers lead activities every weekend, and the park office with a small museum is open during the day or by appointment.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Borrego Springs, CA 92004

For those in town a little longer, Anza-Borrego is a 50 minute drive from Julian and is a highlight of the region in terms of epic scenery. Although it’s only two hours east of San Diego’s beaches, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a world apart from the city and coast. On the eastern side of the Peninsular Ranges, which block most storms coming in off the Pacific, California’s largest state park protects 600,000 acres of desert terrain, including dramatic badlands, cool palm oases, twisting slot canyons, and cactus-studded slopes. Start your trip just northwest of Borrego Springs at the Anza Borrego visitor center. If you want to get full access through the parks many primitive roads consider renting a 4WD with high clearance, or sign up for a Jeep tour with California Overland.
