We met the way many great first responder stories begin—at work, during an early shift, and to the sound of very loud music. I was half-awake, riding with my partner like usual, when he introduced himself. I gave a quick wave, we started the shift, and neither of us knew that a simple hello was about to turn into something so much bigger. That day, as the shift went on, we started talking more. I was his FTO partner, helping him learn the ropes, answering questions, and guiding him through the chaos that comes with the job. Somewhere between calls, laughs, and learning moments, something just clicked. We became good friends almost instantly—like we’d known each other for years instead of hours. The conversations were easy, the teamwork felt natural, and before we knew it, our friendship turned into something deeper. What started as a work shift became the beginning of our forever.
Our “talking stage” really began once he left Metro and started working at Shelby County. With no more opposite schedules in the way, I finally said what we’d both been thinking—we should actually hang out. There was an event happening at Caufields, and on a bit of a whim, I asked him to come with me. He said yes without hesitation, and suddenly we were both way more excited than we expected. Then the nerves kicked in—trying to find the perfect outfit, overthinking everything, and hoping the night would be fun. It was better than fun. We had the best time at Caufields, laughing, talking, and just enjoying being together. The night didn’t end there—we went back to my house to hang out, where he met my dogs. They loved him almost instantly, which felt like the biggest green flag of all. By the end of the night, I told him we had to hang out again and invited him to the bar for my birthday. After that, we became inseparable—always wanting to be around each other and never wanting to leave. What started as “just talking” quickly turned into something we knew was special.
