Omaha It all began in Omaha, with a simple yet unforgettable question: "What do you wanna speak, English or Chinese?" That was the first line exchanged between us, setting the tone for the rest of our journey together. That evening, we found ourselves at a Nebraska Huskers game. It feels like ages ago now, back when the Huskers were still winning more often than not. Those early days were filled with adventures around Omaha, from the Joslyn Art Museum to peaceful strolls through Elmwood Park. It was a simple time, a time we now look back on and recognize as "the good life." After finishing her undergrad, Yuqi pursued her graduate studies in Chicago, a move that marked the next chapter of our story. Close to Chicago, but it’s called Champaign If Omaha was the good life, then Champaign was… well, let’s just say one visit was enough. And yet, I found myself returning more times than I’d care to admit. Each visit somehow managed to outdo the last in sheer disappointment. The low point? A tie between the worst Korean and Chinese restaurants I’ve ever had the misfortune of trying. But even in the bleakness of Champaign, we found our own little sparks of joy—like escaping to nearby Chicago for Christmas. And it was during this time that we took our biggest leap yet: a journey to China that not only deepened our bond but also broadened our horizons in ways we never could have imagined. Santa Clara After grad school, Yuqi landed a job in the Bay Area, and after striking out on applying to medical school, I decided to take my shot in California—much like the gold rushers of old. Adjusting to the absurd cost of living was a challenge (where even starting your car seemed to cost 25 bucks), but soon enough, we began to thrive in the vibrant, sun-soaked life we built together. We marveled at California's natural beauty and explored it with many of our friends. And just as we had started our journey at a Huskers game, we found ourselves drawn to the excitement of the 49ers, whose stadium was practically in our backyard. It was after one of those games, with hearts full of excitement and joy, that we got engaged. Now, as we prepare to start the next chapter of our lives together, I can't help but think back to that first question: "What do you wanna speak, English or Chinese?" It was more than just a question about language—it was the beginning of a lifelong conversation. A conversation that has spanned from Omaha to Santa Clara, from Nebraska football to 49ers games, from the simple to the extraordinary. And as we stand here today, ready to exchange vows, I know that no matter what language we choose, we'll always understand each other. We look forward to sharing this journey with you all, as we continue writing our story—together.
