Kaley and Joey met on a Sunday night in January 2021 watching football with mutual friends. Joey’s beloved Steelers were losing in embarrassing fashion, which gave him the rare opportunity to talk to others in the room. From their first conversation, Kaley and Joey were bonded by their laughter. This night was the first of many jokes (aka “bits”) they would share, including a discussion of the hypothetical wedding between their future Officiant, James, and Kaley’s sister and future Maid of Honor, Shannon. Feeling left out, Joey asked Kaley what his role would be for the ceremony, to which Kaley quickly responded, “you’re the Friend in Law" (whatever that means?). Their memorable banter drove Kaley to invite Joey to her “birthday weekend” a few days later (note: Joey’s birthday is closer in proximity to this weekend). Slowly but surely, their relationship grew as they continuously chose to spend time together. As spring of 2021 rolled around, Kaley and Joey were ready to escape the Covid lockdown and make more memories together. Kaley was Joey’s personal tour guide, showing him around his new city on walks, bike rides, and visits to bars and restaurants. Joey helped Kaley with her golf game, offered obscure sports facts, and recycled movie quotes. In May 2021, Joey asked Kaley to be his girlfriend - after two failed attempts (“I’m a process,” Kaley would later say), she finally said yes! Kaley and Joey continued these experiences together, going to concerts, sporting events, traveling, and other social events. Then, they joined the same workout classes, cooked meals together, and even binge watched shows like Bachelor in Paradise. Fast forward to the spring of 2023, they closed on a condo in Logan Square, Chicago. What started with humor grew into a partnership and turned into their new life together. Sure enough, Joey was able to pull off one of the most miraculous accomplishments of our time: going from "Friend in Law" to fiancé!

The Proposal

Kaley couldn't have been more surprised on the night of the proposal. Funny enough, Joey was surprised too! That's because he had suggested to Kaley that they buy a personalized map for their new condo and his plan was to propose when they hung it up, but it sat in their condo for three weeks still in the box. He didn't want to be too pushy in case she suspected anything, so he was preparing himself for whatever random day it might be. Finally they stopped procrastinating and Joey got Kaley to hang the map on a Wednesday evening. Kaley was putting push pins into the map notating places they were planning to go in future travels when she turns and Joey is down on one knee saying "I don't care where we go as long as I'm with you." Kaley was immediately shocked and elated at the same time. She turned bright red and after she took her glasses off, she said YES!
