It would be a personal preference, but if you do not have a car the shuttle services and mountain 'Uber' called First Tracks are great! They can get you anywhere on the mountain and to and from town. We have been many times relying only on shuttles.
No, but there are direct flights to Gunnison from DFW. Gunnison is only a 30 min shuttle ride or drive from Crested Butte. American Airlines, United, and JSX all fly into Gunnison during the summer months.
