Our story begins in the fall of 2012 at Kansas State University. We had a class together where one day we locked eyes in class. We both recognized each other from high school, but we had never officially met. One night we were introduced out at a bar by one of Rachel’s best friends, who happened to be the younger sister of one of Kale’s friends. I (Rachel) remember immediately feeling a connection to Kale and wanting to get to know him better. I remember thinking that I could marry him (it sounds cliché, but it is true), but I knew he was planning to join the Peace Corps and I assumed he would meet the love of his life wherever he ended up. After we both graduated, we went our separate ways, but would run into each other from time to time while out at the bars in Kansas City. Finally, in 2016, we reconnected and slowly started spending time together. By the fall I (Rachel), was ready to make this thing official. I posted a picture of us together on Facebook at one of our favorite spots, Hi-Dive, where we would go and watch Chiefs games on Sundays. I knew Kale may not be super thrilled about me posting this picture because he was going to get a lot of questions, but I did anyway, and we have been together ever since. Throughout our (almost) five years together we have accomplished and experienced so many exciting things. About a year into our relationship, we moved in together and the real adventure began. We traveled to many new, exciting places together, enjoyed exploring some awesome breweries and restaurants in our city, and shared many moments of success in our personal and professional lives. We cherish all our exciting adventures together, so much so that we have chosen to run off to Colorado with our two sweet boxers for our greatest endeavor yet- getting married! Although we have chosen to have an intimate ceremony, we hope you will join us to celebrate at our reception here in Kansas City.
It all started with a trip to Macy’s. I found the perfect ring and now I needed the perfect plan to propose, during a pandemic. We were supposed to travel to Colorado for a friend’s wedding, but they canceled due to the circumstances. We changed gears and decided to make the most of our vacation time and headed to Breckenridge with our best friends. The plan was just to hike, explore, and even go on a hot air balloon ride. Naturally, when telling friends and family our trip itinerary, everyone had me pegged to pop the question on the hot air balloon. Though it could have had a romantic story and a small audience, that route was not the one for me. I decided to take it one step further and ask Rachel to marry me at 12,000 feet. We got up early and hit the trail. After a very difficult, yet beautiful and rewarding hike, we made it to the first mountain lake on the McCullough Gulch Trail. It was pristine, beautiful, and private, it could not have been a more perfect morning for a hike and the view was breathtaking. I was so nervous getting the ring out of my backpack that I thought Rachel would know I was up to something. After a few great moments were captured from our friends Aaron and Paige, I dropped to a knee and asked Rachel to spend the rest of her life with me. I had a few lines rehearsed in my head prior, but in the moment, I was so full of emotions and joy that I barely managed to get the words out of my mouth. At this point, Rachel sees me pull the little black box out of my pocket and she is already in tears. The plan was perfect and Rachel said yes, of course. Our friends were there to capture the moment and we couldn’t have asked for a better vacation and moment to share together at the top of a mountain. To celebrate once we were back in town, we went to a spot in Breck that serves amazing pizza and drank our weight in wine. The state of Colorado has always been our favorite place to visit and now it will forever be ingrained in our journey together.
