We first crossed paths in high school in 2015, just after I had transferred schools. It was the first day of the new year, and I walked nervously into my very first class, unaware that I was about to meet someone who would change my life forever. In the back of the room sat Rainey beside his partner in crime, Reber, both already immersed in laughter and mischief. At the time, I was far from impressed. To me, they were simply class clowns whose sole ambition seemed to be turning every moment into a joke. As fate would have it, later that same day I discovered I shared another class with Rainey, and by some cruel twist of destiny, I was assigned a seat near his. I remember feeling thoroughly annoyed. Yet as the weeks passed, something unexpected began to happen. I found myself anticipating his humor, waiting for his clever remarks to brighten otherwise ordinary school days. Then one day he was absent from class. And then another day passed, and another. Before long, I realized he had been gone for an entire week—and to my surprise, I genuinely missed him. I missed his laughter, his energy, and the way he could effortlessly make everyone around him smile. When he finally returned, we began spending more and more time together. Conversations became effortless, friendship became something deeper, and eventually we exchanged numbers. From there, the rest became our story. And if Rainey were telling it himself, he would simply say: “Funny guys always win.”
