How it all began

We met about 2 years ago through some mutual friends of ours. We had a group of friends that would meet up for lunch or coffee after church and we started getting to know eachother there. I (kaitlyn) thought that Nick was a solid guy but didn’t really have any interest in him romantically. When I finished grad school in December I joined Nicks small group because several of my friends were in the group and I wanted to get plugged back into Grace Road. One day while at lunch after Church Nick had mentioned to our groupof friends that we should go hiking to a cave near lower falls. Knowing that I would want to go, he asked if I had been there. I fell hook line and sinker into thinking it would be an awesome idea to go there “as a group” sometime. Fast forward several weeks and we were again at lunch with friends, it was a beautiful day in the middle of Rochester’s snowy winter and I had asked everyone if they would like to go hiking with me later. No one seemed interested. I was resolved to go by myself and then Nick texted me after we had left the resturaunt and asked if I wanted to try to get to the cave he had mentioned. He obviously knew I was available so I agreed. We went hiking that day but to the opposite side of the river that the cave was on. (I’m still not sure if that was fully unintentional on Nicks part or not). We then had to go hiking the next week to actually get to the cave. The rest is history. It was so easy to talk to Nick we talked for hours after that first hike. Shortly after we went hiking the Covid shutdowns hit. He was the only person I saw outside of my family for weeks. It allowed for so much time to get to know eachother without the normal distractions of life. We had nothing to do except talk to eachother and hike which neither of us minded.

The Proposal

In October we had a camping trip to the Adirondaks with some of our close friends that we had planned for months. Nick had planned on proposing at Indian Head for awhile. Although we had talked about getting married in 2021, Kaitlyn had no idea that Nick was planning on proposing that weekend. She had figured that the proposal would come sometime in December. It took several hours to hike up to the lookout. Nick kept sneaking away to check on the ring, but he kept his cool the whole way up. Kaitlyn had no idea that anything out of the ordinary was happening. Once at the top, our friend Steve, (Nicks Best Man), who is a photographer, started taking individual pictures of each of the couples on the hike. When Steve was taking our picture (which was actually a video), Nick said “I want to do this forever with you”. Kaitlyn leaned in to hug him because he was being cute and he pulled away shaking. He then got down on one knee and said a whole bunch of sweet things and asked Kaitlyn to marry him. He could not have timed it more perfectly, the fall leaves were at peak color, and the rain held off for another 10 minutes after he proposed.
