How and When We Met

First comes school, then comes marriage

The story begins on an Autumn night in 2017. There’s no special setting here, only a dark, cold, concrete parking garage on the edge of Auburn’s Campus, but if you know these two it makes perfect sense. LaMarcus, a Sophomore and Kaitlyn, a Freshman were both attending a car meet hosted by Auctane, a University Car Club. Like most stories involving LaMarcus, there was no deep first impression meeting, but only a passing “Hellooooo” as LaMarcus walked through checking out all of the cars with what can only be described as his signature “Autistic” focus. Kaitlyn, new to this big world and new place away from home was luckily not put off enough by that to stop showing up. Through a few car meets, dinners, late night chats, and shared classes, LaMarcus and Kaitlyn eventually became friends. However, after one particularly harrowing night filled with police escorts and waffle house fights, they became very close. Although most normal people would have began dating right around then, LaMarcus and Kaitlyn were both too daft to admit they loved each other for the next 2 years, but finally on a beach in Biloxi, Mississippi of all places, friends turned into more. All the years of pretending that life was okay without each other finally ended on that beach, the warm glow of the sun sitting in each other’s arms. For the first time in both of their lives, everything finally seemed right in the world and it felt as Mother Earth herself was content and giving her approval. From that day on, a beautiful relationship began to blossom despite years of COVID, despite years of long-distance dating, and despite two bright engineers balancing career against life. As a testament to both of their hardheadedness, neither one gave up on each other and each trial helped make what they had stronger and more special. These years peeled away their preconceived expectations of life and taught these two logic loving engineers about the reality of love and how illogical life could be. In 2023, LaMarcus and Kaitlyn were finally together in the same city again, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina where they built a home and became a part of a small local community of Moncks Corner Natives. On Saturday August 9th, 2025 after spending a week camping in West Virginia, LaMarcus knew he couldn’t return back home without making things right. So there, in a creek within a holler where Kaitlyn grew and played as a child, LaMarcus asked her to spend the rest of their lives together. A moment that many people, most of whom are here in this room assumed would have happened many years ago, finally came to be. So now what? What they have is special and will last forever, through this life and the next, partially because they are both too stubborn to quit, but mostly because God has forged a bond here that can never be broken, and being engineers, they can fix anything. So far, 9 years have passed, and they are looking forward to many, many more…
