Yuriy and I had just been home for Yuriy’s last vacation leave before he got deployed to South Korea. He had asked my dad if he could marry me after our last night out for dinner as a family and of course he said yes. The next day we flew back to Texas where I’d spend the next few days with Yuriy until the long line of white busses would come and pick him up. We had a storage unit in Texas full of stuff we’d eventually move back once he got back from deployment. The day after we got back to Texas, he said he had forgotten something in storage that he needed for deployment. I didn’t think anything of it because he had all sorts of gear he needed to take with him. Anyways, we get to the storage unit and he’s climbing on things trying to find what he’s looking for and he says that it’s not there (I think he said he was looking for a holster or something). He jumps down from the box he was standing on not realizing that when he jumped down, a little ring box would fall out of his pocket onto the ground. We both just stared at the box on the floor of the storage unit and he says, “well, this isn’t how I wanted to do this” and got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course without a doubt I said yes!!! We had been planning on going to a special sunset dinner the next evening on Lake Travis in Austin and he was going to propose there. We ended up still going and took pictures, since a sunset on a lake is a lot prettier than a U-Haul storage unit, but I always love an unplanned silly story.
