Set atop the Gauley River Canyon, the 156-acre Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park preserves the site of the 1861 Battle of Carnifex Ferry, a key Union victory in the that led to the eventual Confederate withdrawal from western Virginia. One of the nation’s oldest state parks, it is part of the Civil War Discovery Trail and a popular location for reenactments.
