I first met Kerry Freshman year of high school, on our ultimate frisbee team that we joined with mutual friends. He was more of the competitive athlete, while I chose to strategically stand in the end zone hoping no one would throw me the frisbee. Being totally different people, our paths didn’t cross much outside of this, yet he still noticed me and asked a friend for my number. From that point on, we continued to text every day, discussing family, friends, baseball, and more. We soon became close friends as text conversations carried over from May and into the beginning of Sophomore year. Come Fall of 2009, we had what we now call our “first date”. During a Friday night high school football game, we met downtown by the field and walked laps around the block - at his nervous pace of a pure sprint. The conversation never seemed to slow, even as our friends heckled us as we walked by and I struggled to keep an even breath. Later that month, I received a hand-written note from Kerry. After a small ramble about study hall and finishing English homework, it read, “Well I just wanted to let you know that I like you... Wow I was so scared about doing this, but I really wanted it to get off my chest.” With butterflies in my stomach, I wrote a note back to him confirming the same feelings from me, still unsure what was to happen next. October 15, 2009: Kerry found me in the hall as I was walking to Biology class with friends. Both of our friend groups seemed to carefully eavesdrop to hear him ask, “Will you go out with me?” and my reply “Sure”. I know, a very heartwarming response, but I was just trying to keep cool - this is my first boyfriend! A few days later, he surprised me with flowers and asked me to go to the Homecoming Dance with him. The dance was awkward as we only knew how to dance to a few slow songs, but we still had fun together. Kerry broke out some ICONIC moves to “I’m Walking on Sunshine” and I have been hooked ever since.
Planning my proposal to Kaileen, I wanted a date that was going to have the majority of our families in the same place at once. So I decided on the date of the Annual Meyers Family MeatFest. Now I couldn't plan all the logistics out by myself, so I had to reach out to my cousin, Makealy. The final plan was to go to where we first hung out, which was at our high school football field, Memorial Field. Once there, Makealy, Nicole, and a couple of her friends were going to help setup a table with champagne, a sign, table cloth, and flowers. Along with the table, I printed out photos of us through the years to have them pinned up and hung on string between trees leading us to the table. Leading into the morning of May 25th, Kaileen thought she was having brunch with myself, Makealy, and Nicole, dressed up in nice clothes. Getting ready that morning, we were about 30 minutes ahead of schedule - which never happens. While waiting in my apartment for Makealy and crew to finish up, my roommate, Derin, starts to ask us questions about what we’re doing. I reply to Derin, "Kaileen and I are getting brunch". His response: "Why you dressed so nice"? To be honest, I don't think I even gave him an answer to that. Still waiting for that text from Makealy, I start to pace around the apartment. Kaileen asked me, "Why are you pacing"? I blamed the coffee I was drinking. I finally receive the text message to head over to the field. We park near the field and we start walking down. I needed Kaileen to go a certain way so she wouldn't see the decorations. Of course, Kaileen wanted to go the way she wasn't supposed to, so I had to yell at her to FOLLOW ME. Once we get down to the park-let by the field where everything was setup, she notices the table and says, "Thats a nice table". I start to pull her up in the grass where she starts to notice everything. As we get to the table and she sees the sign she goes, "Are you serious"? I drop down to one knee and I asked her to be my wife.
