It all began with fate erupting a volcano on the other side of the world. Thus began a chain reaction of events starting with the canceling of Kaila's flight to Bali. She was stuck in Bend with no agenda and a canceled adventure. So instead, she found herself getting a dinner with an old friend that was in town. Little did she know, her friend was dating a guy from Eugene that that also brought a friend (this guy) and we all decided to meet at a local Thai restaurant. Through random connections and a touch of fate we both landed in the same place at the same time. As the night went on, Alejandro thought Kaila was beautiful and tried to talk to her many times but found all his advances foiled by her giving him the cold shoulder. Every time Alejandro would say something funny (and this guy is hilarious) or try to engage her in a conversation she would hardly make eye contact. You see, Kaila thought Alejandro was in a relationship. Once it was revealed that they were both single in the same place at the same time the game was on. It was a battle of wits with chess-like power plays to see if one another were worth the other person's time. Much to our surprise as the whiskey-ginger's flowed many boxes were checked in our minds regarding this mysterious new person. Thus, the interest was peaked. We were both the same stubborn, strong-willed, and free spirit we had been searching for. After all this time being single we had finally found that person. Then Alejandro asked for Kailas number. Which she quickly responded saying, "No." Alejandro could not bare to watch himself get denied being so close to this unicorn of a human. He persisted almost to the point of begging. Ok let’s be honest, he begged. He swallowed his pride, he didn't care. He wanted a damn unicorn. She gave in once she saw him begging because she felt pity for the guy. She gave her number and the rest was history. -Alejandro
Once i knew i wanted to marry Kaila I thought of every possible way I could tell the woman I love I want to spend the rest of my life with her. My best idea as the weeks past was faking a kidnapping. I thought it all out. I pay a friend to kidnap Kaila, tie her up, throw her in a van, toss her in a field and drive away. When she eventually cuts herself loose and removes her blindfold she sees me in the middle of this poppy field (she loves poppies), before a beautiful white table and chairs with a delicious dinner layed out as a violinist plays a background sonata. I get down on one knee and say, “Sorry about the whole kidnapping thing. Will you marry me?” Flawless! Modern Romeo over here! How do uou say no to that? Ok, maybe it isn’t the best of ideas but it was what we had at the time. I kept thinking. I was sitting in the sunroom of our house brainstorming once more when it came to me. We just bought a house. A beautiful, romantic, lovely house we have made into our home. We both are absolutely obsessed with our home. “Here! I will do it right here.” That is when the master plan was set in motion. I then purchased hundreds of dollars worth of cafe lights, string lights, flowers, an amazing photographer, movie production fake snow from some guy in New York (you can buy anything on the dark web), and a snow machine sent down to me from Seattle. I will make her dream home a winter winderland (The rational being, she can’t say no if she saw how much effort I put in). The day arrived. She came home from working long hours in Bend and she was exhausted. After a good 45 minutes of stalling and killing time I told her to close her eyes and come with me (she was not amused). “Can we get this over with? I am hungry and I just want to change and relax.” I walked her to the front of the house and reminded her not to peek. “I am not peeking. Just hurry up.” She was making the mood more and more romantic by the second. Continue on to Part 2
The photographer was in place, there was snow covering every inch of grass and sprinkled all over the bordering rose bushes, lining the fence and stairs. Snow fell all around us ever so gently. The cafe lights engulfed the night sky being strung from the roof over our front yard to the pergola vibrantly decorated with dozens of roses tunneling our entrance. The stairs and walkway were lined with dozens of white and red roses, at least a hundred candles, and eucalyptus. Our home was now a sight to behold. It was perfect! I stood below the stairs stairing up at the woman I love about to reveal this new world I have brought together for her. “Open your eyes.” Her beautiful hazel eyes glowed in the yellow light. Her gaze scanned the front of the house trying to comprehend the transformation of the home she loves. She formed the only words she can, “You put up lights?” Her brain still trying to make sense of her familiar yet alien surroundings, she looks at me silently. It is not until she sees the photographer to her right the thought of what is actually happening crosses through her mind. She looks back at me as I slowly get down on one knee. “I am sorry it took so long,” I say as I reach in my jacket and pull out a small black box. I show her the ring inside and utter the phrase I have been replaying to myself for the last 3 months. “Will you marry me?” “Yes,” she softly utters as she leans in to kiss me. Elated she did not say no, I pull the ring out of the box and instantly realize something was wrong. The tag is still on the damn ring! My embarrassment heightens and I try to play it cool. I keep kissing her trying to buy time. Of course, they use the plastic tag that is way more tough than it needs to be. “At last!” I manage to rip the tag off without tossing the ring in the 2 inches of snow around us, thank God. I put the ring on her finger and read her facial expression. Pure happiness! She had no idea. Smooth Alejandro! Mission accomplished!
Over many long discussions about the meaning of marriage (cocktails may or may not have been involved) and what that meant to us, we decided that for this intimate moment for two very passionate and romantic people would be better spent with just the two of us. We eloped along the Oregon Coast on September 27, 2019. We are sorry to hurt everyone's feelings and believe us when we say we missed you all! Ultimately this day was about us and this new wild adventure we call ‘Mawage,’ and we wanted to celebrate that!
