Though we grew up not far from one another and went to neighboring schools, our paths never quite crossed the way you’d expect. Kaelie was close friends with Matt’s brother, but somehow, she and Matt didn’t say more than a few words to each other… until their mid-20s. On a rainy day in May, he brought Kaelie to her favorite place—her family’s hunting property. There, in front of a deeply meaningful spot where her dad’s ashes are spread, Matt got down on one knee and asked the question.
