Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Justin Ward and Kelsey Terry
Birmingham is a great medium sized city with a world class dining scene, great breweries/cocktail bars, and a colorful history that is encapsulated in local museums. Birmingham has many fine dining options and is home to several James Beard Award Winning chefs/restaurants. Bottega, Current, Automatic Seafood, Helen, The Highlands, Hot & Hot Fish Club, Ovenbird, Blueprint on 3rd are all excellent fine dining options. If you are looking for lower key options check out some of our favorites! For beer check out Ghost Train Brewery, Good People, District Brews, Monday Night Brewing, Trim Tab Brewery, Tucana Tiki, cocktail recommendations are listed below. If you are looking for museums or historical attractions check out Vulcan, The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, The Birmingham Zoo, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Sloss Furnace, McWane Science Center, and the Museum of Art. A few of our favorites are listed below. Don't hesitate to ask for additional recommendations.

EastWest

2306 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203

Asian fusion. This is where Kelsey and Justin had their first date on 1/27/23 and celebrated their one year anniversary a year later. Try the duck nachos or the coconut bread pudding.

El Barrio

2211 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203

Upscale Mexican restaurant. Try the chorizo meatloaf and the seasonal guacamole. The magaritas are also top notch! They do not take reservations so we recommend going early. House of Found Objects is a great bar two doors down that is a great place to wait for your table.

Chuck's Fish Birmingham

5426 U.S. 280, Birmingham, AL 35242

This is a great place for Sushi and Fresh Gulf Seafood. They are owned by Harbor Docks out of Destin, FL and bring in fresh seafood daily. Make sure to Google their secret sushi menu as those are our go-to's. This location is not downtown, but actually next to the church.

Trattoria Zaza

207A 20th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203

A very casual, but outstanding, local spot for Italian. Must try their pizzas, pastas, and brunch (try the French Toast and the Breakfast Pasta!).

SAW’s Soul Kitchen

215 41st Street South, Birmingham, AL 35222

This is our go to for BBQ in Birmingham. If you are not in the mood for classics such as pork, smoked chicken w/ Alabama White Sauce, or smoked chicken thighs, try their burgers and the Sweat Tea Chicken Sandwich. The Pork Skins with Pimento Cheese/Pepper Jelly is a must for an appetizer.

Hattie B's Hot Chicken - Birmingham

2808 7th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233

This is a great place for Nashville Hot Chicken! If you are the bravest of the brave try the "Shut the Cluck Up" heat level. For reference we normally get Mild or Medium (if we are being brave). Try the Grits or Pimento Mac N' Cheese as a side.

Uncle G’s Pizza

1851 Montgomery Highway, Hoover, AL 35244

Our favorite go to for unique pizza: Detroit Style. Try the The Prince (meat lovers) or Buffalo Bill. Make sure to get extra sauce (as the sauce goes on top), a side of Hot Honey, and a Cinnamon Roll for dessert! There is a brick and mortar location in Hoover, but there is also one food truck at Hop City Brewery and a second food truck that travels around the area. Find Uncle G's on Instagram for their weekly schedule.

Big Spoon Creamery

4000 3rd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35222

Our absolute favorite for dessert! Big Spoon has two locations (Avondale and Homewood) and makes great homemade artisan ice cream!

Mayawell Bar

2900 4th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233

Excellent tequila bar. Kelsey’s pick: Figgly Wiggly or Blackberry Margarita. Justin’s pick: Don’t tell a sol

Tucana Tiki Bar

1143 1st Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35233

Fun tiki bar with great drinks.

Adiõs

2218 1st Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203

Mexico City themed bar with excellent cocktails and a unique atmosphere.

House of Found Objects

2205 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203

Very unique bar with excellent cocktails. Perfect for a drink while you wait for a table at a nearby restaurant such as El Barrio.

Vulcan Park and Museum

1701 Valley View Drive, Birmingham, AL 35209

The Vulcan statue is the largest cast iron statue in the world, and is the city symbol of Birmingham, reflecting its roots in the iron and steel industry. The statue depicts the Roman god Vulcan, god of the fire and forge, with ironworking equipment. It was created as Birmingham's entry for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904 World's Fair) in St. Louis, Missouri. The park not only offers great views of the statue but of downtown Birmingham.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute

520 16th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203

Birmingham is well-known for its place in the Civil Rights movement. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, part of the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument and an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is a cultural and educational research center that promotes a comprehensive understanding for the significance of civil rights developments in Birmingham. Make sure to check out the 16th Street Baptist Church which is adjacent to the Civil Rights Institute.

Birmingham Zoo

2630 Cahaba Road, Birmingham, AL 35223

The Birmingham Zoo is a great place to take children and is located in Mountain Brook which is a delightful suburb of Birmingham with many great local shops and restaurants.
